Spraying magnesium chloride (MgCl2) or calcium chloride (CaCl2) on motorways is a so-called adopting measure that does not reduce the actual production of fine dust, but reduces the whirling of fine dust. Mitigating measures, which actually push back the emission of fine dust from cars, for example, score better with regard to cost effectiveness and eco-balance. However, it is not reasonable to expect that sufficient mitigating measures can be carried out in the short term to reduce any peaks in the fine dust in the Netherlands. Until that time, spraying magnesium chloride or calcium chloride is a good alternative because this solution will reduce the swirling of fine dust immediately -with limited resources and limited side-effects.
