Winter maintenance
Calcium chloride and magnesium chloride are traditional and essential winter road maintenance salts. They are key elements in the road departments' strategies for maintaining serviceable roads in winter. These strategies include pre-wetting road salt before applying it to the road, using salts as anti-icers before or just after snow storms, and pre-treating sand stockpiles to keep them free flowing in cold weather.
Wet salt spreading rather than using dry road salt has the following advantages:
- The de-icing process starts quicker
- A higher working speed
- A more efficient use of wet salt is possible with a more precise dosage
- Possible savings on road salt of up to 25-30%
