Dust control with Magnesium Chloride and Calcium Chloride
Magnesium chloride (MgCl2) and calcium chloride (CaCl2) are very effective de-icers that are used in many countries around the world. It is less known that the same products are highly cost-effective for dust control on dirt roads, construction sites, as well as in cities and along motorways.
In Canada and the United States, magnesium chloride and calcium chloride are commonly used road-dust suppressors to provide
dust control on unpaved roads and
base stabilisation on construction sites.
In Europe several projects were set up with the aim of reducing
fine-dust concentrations (PM10) in cities by using magnesium chloride or calcium chloride as dust control agents.
In the Netherlands, testing started last year. Under the auspices of the Dutch Ministry of Traffic, calcium chloride solution was sprayed to reduce
swirling fine dust along motorways.
The results of these studies are very positive - the hygroscopic properties of calcium chloride and magnesium chloride regulate moisture on road surfaces and provide cleaner air, a smooth riding surface, better visibility, and reduce dust-related health risks.
