Magnesium chloride (MgCl2) is used for the production of magnesium-oxychloride cement, the so-called Sorel cement. Sorel cement has a good resistance to abrasion, good fire resistant properties, is much lighter, and is easy to process. Products made of Sorel cement are not affected by solvents, paint, oil or grease, however Sorel cement has a poor resistance to water. The main applications of Sorel cement are industrial floorings (cast floors), fire protection products, grinding wheels, abrasive stones, and artificial stone ornaments.
